Kenya produces the finest specialty coffees in the world, and is rightly known as the ancient birthplace of coffee. We are thrilled to offer our latest Kenyan release, which hails from the Kibugu Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Embu County. This crop has an intriguing flavor profile, with notes of fresh roasted pineapple, yellow peach and a punch of sweet-sour tamarind.
Thanks to the region’s rich volcanic soil and abundant rainfall, Embu has been described as a “Garden of Eden” for coffee production where a wide variety of exceptional varieties grow. Local smallholder farmers bring their crops to washing stations like Ghicherori Factory, lifted by the slopes of the pristine wilderness of Mount Kenya. The fresh coffee cherries are depulped, fermented in large tanks, washed, and at last dried on typical African raised beds for seven to 10 days before being graded and sorted for export.
There is something magical about Kenya’s coffee production, which takes place alongside crops of macadamia nuts, corn and bananas. It is said that the Embu people believe Mount Kenya is the sacred residence of God, and build their homes facing it in reverence. We are fortunate to be able to source this rare coffee gem, and can’t wait to share it with you.
